  Sonia Newton is the Group Director of the LVS, where she oversees the various departments, ensures legal and research compliance, and manages strategic initiatives, advisory councils, and public participation forums. She plays a central role in aligning LVS’s work with its mission to defend democracy, uphold transparency, and advance human rights.

As a human rights analyst at the Human Rights Impact Lab (HRIL), Newton leads investigations into systemic injustices in South Africa, producing evidence-based research that informs national and international policy. She focuses on vulnerable populations and high-risk regions, combining legal expertise, fieldwork, and data analysis to expose human rights violations and push for meaningful reform.

With extensive experience in managing donor-funded projects, Newton brings valuable insight into accountability, program delivery, and impact measurement. Her leadership in grassroots public participation also gives her a real-time understanding of the challenges South Africans face, which she channels into inclusive, community-driven policy solutions.

Newton contributes to the South Africa Futures Project in collaboration with the NextChapter SA Think Tank, where her work focuses on human rights, minority protections, and transitional justice. She also supports the Alternative Governance Research and Advisory (AGRA) division, developing governance models for culturally diverse and politically fragile environments, and works closely with the South African Citizens Tribunal (SACT) to help restore accountability and lawful governance in the face of South Africa’s constitutional crisis.

  Andrea Shea is the Acting Communications Director of LVS, where she oversees the organization’s communications strategy, public engagement, and global outreach. A seasoned researcher, statistician, and committed advocate for minority rights, Shea is known for her data-driven approach to confronting human rights abuses and exposing the democratic decline in South Africa.

An expatriate South African, Shea draws deeply from her lived experience to amplify the voices of marginalized communities on the international stage, particularly those seeking sovereignty, justice, and protection from systemic discrimination. Her work aims to bridge rigorous evidence-based research with compelling public narratives that shape public opinion and influence policy reform.

Shea holds advanced degrees in Biostatistics and Global Communicable Diseases, with a strong academic foundation in Biology and Chemistry. Her scientific background underpins her analytical methods, allowing her to dissect complex social and political phenomena with precision. Whether interpreting data trends on minority displacement or developing public health-informed human rights responses, she approaches every challenge with intellectual rigor and unwavering ethical commitment.

Within HRIL, Shea plays a key role in transforming raw data into actionable insights, identifying emerging trends in systemic injustice, and crafting communications that drive international attention and advocacy.
